Ancestry.com State Research Guides

Ancestry.com New York state research guideI learned last week about new, free state research guides available from Ancestry.com. The guides are PDF files which can be downloaded and kept on your own computer or mobile device.

“Our state research guide series includes historical background, a chronology, helpful information on census and vital record availability, highlighted collection[s] for that place on Ancestry.com, and links to important resources beyond Ancestry.com,” reads the research guide website.

I looked at the New York state guide. It does indeed contain the elements mentioned above. Besides links to all the New York collections on Ancestry.com, it contains links to other helpful websites such as the New York State Archives, the New York State Library, and the Italian Genealogical Group’s New York City Vital Records Indexes. Conspicuously absent were links to FamilySearch.org and Ancestry.com’s own wiki. While it had a link to the Library of Congress’s Chronicling America online newspaper collection, I didn’t see links to the larger New York newspaper collections on Old Fulton NY Post Cards and Northern New York Historical Newspapers websites.

  1. Thanks for telling us about these guides. Mac users should know that the guides are unreadable in Preview but can be read in Adobe Reader.

    1. Good to know about the guides. I use a Mac (MacBook Pro) and read them just fine in Preview (6.0.1).
